Dance Performace- Missing
Date: 5/22/2013
The week of David Bolger's Missing performance and talk is upon us. There is still time to register your interest in attending the performance, which runs from this Thursday the 23rd to Sunday the 26th 2013, and the talk, which takes place at 2pm on Saturday the 25th, all in Smock Alley Theatre.

"Create", the national development agency for collaborative arts, is curating a talk as part of the Moving Conversations series in partnership with the Dublin Dance Festival to discuss the issues raised by David Bolger's dance piece Missing, which is inspired by the iconography and terminology related to missing persons. During the talk, which will take place on the 25th of May at 2 pm, the artist will offer insight into the creative processes and research journey behind the work and encourage discussion on the timely issue. It is our hope that the audience will engage with and contribute to the discussion around this sensitive subject matter. As the dance piece and event are expected to attract friends and family of missing persons, and as we are very aware of delicate nature of the issue, we would be delighted to have representation from support bodies and researchers in attendance.

Anniversary of Missing of Aengus Shanahan
Date: 2/9/2013
On Monday 11 February 2013 Gussie Shanahan will be 13 years missing. The sad fact is that despite all the efforts of so many people and so much publicity he continues to be missing and presumed dead at this stage. I have no doubt that there are people who have information that could end this nightmare for his family and friends. His family are still hoping that at some point someone will come forward with precise information that will enable them to locate Gussie's remains and to have a funeral rite for him.

If you are the person who has that information, end the silence and come forward.

Missing Persons Search and Recovery
Date: 2/6/2013
When a missing person's appeal is made to the public, search units will as a matter of routine search in water and on land. The unit's presence on either water or land should not be assumed by members of the public that the missing person being searched for is in one place or the other.

We are appealing to all members of the public who may see a water search in operation to continue to keep an eye open for the missing person on land, we have posted this notice as we feel search activity on the water can leave the public thinking that the person is not alive and on land. Please share this important notice with all your friends it may well save the life of a missing person. Thank you for your assistance in spreading this message.

New Message Home service launched for Missing Persons
Date: 12/12/2012
Many thousands of Missing Persons reports are received by Gardai each year, while no official statistics are available it is to be expected that some of these people will have run away or gone missing by personal choice. This can be for a variety of reasons including relationship breakdown, personal or financial problems, a desire to start a new life etc. It is not a crime to go missing and the Missing Persons Helpline respects the right of an individual to go and remain “missing”. However, for family and friends left behind there is often heartache, confusion and worry about what has happened.

Christmas is a special occasion for families, for some however it can be a particularly trying time with that empty chair at the dinner table and memories of happier times. At this time of year the Helpline usually issues its annual appeal for Missing Persons to get in touch with their families. We know that for the missing person returning home or getting in touch with their family is not always an option and so the Helpline has launched a “Message Home” service on Freefone 1800 911 999. The purpose of this service is to enable those who are currently listed as Missing in or from Ireland, to leave a message for their family to let them know they are alive and well. If the missing person is willing to speak with someone, they can call our Helpline number on 1890 442 552. However, if he/she would prefer to leave a voice mail they can do so, the Helpline will then act as an intermediary and pass the message along to the intended recipient.

This service is unique in Ireland, fully confidential and will operate 24/7, callers cannot be traced.

Commenting on the launch of Message Home, Dermot Browne, Chairman of Missing in Ireland Support Service, said “sometimes direct contact with those left behind is not possible because of the passage of time or regret for actions taken. As a support service we hope to bridge the communications gap and bring reassurance to those who worry about what has happened to their missing loved one” .

Helpline Co-ordinator Ciaran Casey confirmed that a similar service is in place in the UK but is based around direct contact with Helpline, “obviously we don’t have the same level of resources available to us and our service makes best use of todays technology. I deal with affected families on a daily basis and witness the pain and trauma that they are going through. This can now be helped with a single phone call to say I’m ok!”.
